Ollama WordSmith
Translate, summarize, explain, enhance, and look up text using local LLMs via Ollama — fully private, offline-capable, and free. No data leaves your machine, no API subscriptions required.

- History — Entries stored locally in Vicinae Cache, viewable with full detail, deletable individually or bulk
- Input preprocessing — URLs and code blocks are masked before inference to prevent translation/corruption, then restored in the output
- Output postprocessing — Residual AI meta-commentary (
"Sure! Here is...") is stripped automatically - Enhanced system prompts — Structured global + per-mode prompt architecture with behavioral role definitions, input/output/failure rule isolation, and contrastive examples for hallucination resistance
Requirements
- Ollama installed and running (
ollama serve) - At least one model pulled (recommended:
ollama pull translategemma:4b) - Vicinae (compatible with Linux)
Installation
From Store (once published)
Use the Vicinae store command to install Ollama WordSmith.
Manual (development / self-build)

The extension is now built and installed. Restart Vicinae if needed.

Open Vicinae Preferences → Extensions → Ollama WordSmith:

Per-Mode Model Selection
Each mode can use a different model:
- Open any command view
- Press
Ctrl+Mto open the model browser - Select a model — it is saved per-mode in local Cache
If no per-mode model is set, the Default Model preference is used.
Keyboard Shortcuts
All actions use ctrl / shift only (no super/command key), to avoid Linux window manager conflicts.

Usage
- Open the desired command from Vicinae root search
- Type or paste text in the search bar
- After an 800ms debounce, the model starts generating
- Result streams in real-time in the detail panel
- Use the language dropdown (top-right) to change target language
- All actions available via keyboard shortcuts
Mode Behavior
Translate — Produces a fluent, idiomatic translation of the input text into the target language. Handles mixed-language input (e.g. English-Indonesian code-switching) by producing a coherent output fully in the target language.
Summarize — Condenses text while preserving critical information, names, numbers, and dates. Uses a main-point-first hierarchy. Does not add interpretations or resolve ambiguity.
Explain — Breaks down concepts for a non-expert audience. Structured as overview → key concepts → context (if source-grounded) → breakdown. Omits sections where context is unavailable rather than fabricating.
Enhance — Fixes grammar, spelling, and clarity while preserving the author's voice, tone, and stylistic choices. Makes minimal changes to already well-written text.
Dictionary — Look up a word or short phrase. Provides IPA pronunciation, definitions per part of speech, example sentences, and optional etymology. When used with different source and target languages, definitions are shown bilingually. Sections the model cannot produce reliably are omitted.

Modern applications range from virtual assistants to autonomous vehicles, medical diagnosis, and recommendation algorithms. Expected: Overview sentence + key points. Factual. No added interpretations.
Explain
Input: "Bayesian inference is a method of statistical inference in which Bayes' theorem is used to update the probability for a hypothesis as more evidence or information becomes available."
Expected: Structured breakdown: overview → key concepts → context → breakdown. Plain language, defines jargon.
Enhance
Input: "Our team has completed the initial analysis and identified several areas where we can improve efficiency. We recommend implementing the changes gradually to minimize disruption."
Expected (Casual): "Hey, we've gone through the initial analysis and found a few spots where we can work better. Let's roll out the changes slowly so it doesn't mess things up too much."
Expected (Professional): Same tone as input — minimal changes, the text is already well-written.

Architecture
Prompt System
The extension uses a three-layer prompt architecture designed for small local LLMs:

This structure reduces instruction drift and attention fragmentation — common failure modes in sub-8B models — by keeping each layer's responsibility explicit and minimizing overlap.
Processing Pipeline
User input
→ Preprocess (mask URLs, code blocks)
→ Build prompt (GLOBAL + MODE + ROLE + TASK + lang instruction)
→ Ollama inference (streaming, temperature=0.1)
→ Postprocess (restore masks, strip residual meta-commentary)
→ Display + save to history
Deterministic operations (URL masking, empty input detection, meta-commentary stripping) are handled in code rather than encoded in prompts, reducing token count and improving reliability.

Troubleshooting
"Ollama is not running"
Start Ollama: ollama serve in your terminal.
"Model not found"
Run ollama list to see installed models, or ollama pull <model-name>.
Request is slow
- Larger models take longer. Try
gemma3:4borllama3.2:3b. - Ensure sufficient RAM/VRAM.
- First request after pulling a model is slower due to model loading.
Streaming output is choppy / stalls
- Check Ollama logs (
ollama servein verbose mode). - The extension falls back to non-streaming on error automatically.

Privacy
This extension runs entirely locally. All text processing happens on your machine through Ollama. No data is ever sent to external servers. No API keys, no accounts, no telemetry.
